Performing Arts

Preparing Students for the World Stage

At The British School - El Colegio Británico, we believe creative expression is fundamental to a complete education. Our Performing Arts programme gives every child a platform to find their voice, build their confidence, and develop unique talents.

From taking their first steps on stage in Early Years to commanding an audience in a Secondary school debate, our students learn to communicate with passion, creativity, and conviction. Whether through music, drama, dance, or public speaking, we nurture the practical skills that empower them to succeed in every aspect of their lives.

Music

Our Music department cultivates an environment where students develop emotional and auditory intelligence, coordination, creativity, and self-esteem. Music is woven into the daily life of the school, filling every corner with a wide variety of activities designed to inspire participation at every level.

Our programme integrates musical learning from day one:

  • Early Years: Music and Movement, Dance, Strings in Class
  • Primary: Express Music, Musical Garden (Percussion), Magic Ukuleles, ClassBand
  • Secondary: Music Tech

In addition to the subjects above, students can learn the following instruments from an early age:

  • Strings: Violin, Viola, Cello
  • Woodwind: Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone
  • Brass: Trumpet, Trombone
  • Other: Guitar, Piano, Voice, Drums

Teamwork and collaboration are at the heart of our music programme. Students enjoy being part of a wide range of instrumental and vocal groups, including:

  • Orchestras
  • Chamber Ensembles
  • Rock Bands
  • Big Bands
  • Brass Bands
  • Choirs

Concerts and Events

Our young musicians frequently perform at events both inside and outside the school, giving them invaluable opportunities to demonstrate their progress and talent. The British School proudly participates in events such as the Hay Festival in Segovia, charity concerts, and collaborations with the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, alongside our own celebrated Christmas, spring, and summer concerts. Alongside major concerts, student performances are a central part of every school ceremony.

Theatre and Dance

Theatre

Drama is offered within the academic curriculum at all stages and students can choose to study it at IGCSE level. Through performance, students stimulate their imagination, grow in self-confidence, and develop essential skills in teamwork, leadership, and creative risk-taking.

Throughout their time with us, pupils frequently perform on stage in both English and Spanish in annual class plays, large-scale musicals, and concerts. Recent productions include:

  • Blood Wedding
  • Peter Pan
  • The Musicians of Bremen
  • Twelfth Night
  • Cinderella Rockefeller Pantomime

Dance

Dance is a core part of our curriculum, sparking motor skills development in Early Years and building advanced abilities through the Physical Education programme in Primary and Secondary.

Beyond the curriculum, dance is one of our most popular extracurricular activities. Over 150 students aged 3 to 18 practice a variety of forms each week:

  • Spanish Dance: Flamenco and other passionate local styles that fill our school with life and energy.
  • Classical Ballet: A traditional and technical form of dance. Our ballet students take official exams from the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing (ISTD) and perform in a spectacular annual show—one of the most popular events of the year.

Public Speaking and Debate

The ability to speak with clarity and confidence is a skill that benefits students for life. Our pupils begin speaking in public at three years old, progressing from group Choral Speaking competitions in Primary to the art of declamation in Secondary, where they recite notable speeches and master the techniques for high-level public address.

This journey helps them master essential skills, including:

  • Clear pronunciation and intonation
  • Rich vocabulary and grammar
  • Effective non-verbal communication
  • The strategic use of pace and silence.

Debate through the Model United Nations (MUN)

Our high school students hone their skills at the highest level by participating in the Model United Nations, a global programme where they simulate international diplomacy through debate, negotiation, and critical thinking. This programme provides invaluable learning and leadership experiences highly sought after by top universities and reinforces our core values of respect, dignity, and tolerance.

"It showed me a lot of skills that could not have been learned any other way than by putting them into practice. For example, it taught me to think on my feet and come up with arguments out of the blue and be able to debate on a certain idea that might not be your own point of view."

– Nuria, Model United Nations student
